Let it Go – Goodbyes are never easy, but sometimes they are necessary. Think of it as a cleanse, it might be uncomfortable but it it will be worth it in the end. You should start by making a keep and toss pile and be honest about your decisions. You will probably be faced with lots of self-reflection and begin to ask yourself, “why don’t I wear this?” or “What was I thinking?!” but the most important HONEST question to ask yourself before tossing or keeping an item is “Will I ever wear this again?”. Once you’ve made your decision, you can give it a proper goodbye and get excited for the new items that you’re making space for.
Make a Playlist – Organizing/cleaning isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a fun afternoon! The best way to enjoy this cleaning sesh is to make a playlist that will have you jamming and organizing.
Follow the “One Year Rule” – The One Year Rule is the golden rule of cleaning out a closet, it is when you must toss an item that you haven’t worn in a year. Chances are, if you haven’t worn an item in a year, you probably won’t wear it this upcoming year.
Invest in Organization – Oh yes, we’re talking about Bed Bath & Beyond and Ikea. The holy grails of organization. They will save you from so much stress and make you see the light at the end of the tunnel. This is a great option for those closets who are busting at the seams. Being organized will also allow you to keep more items or purchase more items because of the extra space you will have.
Hijack a Friend – Grab a friend whose opinion you trust and kidnap them for the day. They will be the voice of reason for those items you can’t let go of. Not to mention, you will get the job done twice as fast! It’s a win/win situation.
