3 Trends that are Replacing Necklaces

With the rise of newfound hipsters and the return of ‘90s trends, necklaces are finding a spot in your bedside dresser. The trendiest of fashion gurus have put their necklaces aside and are wearing new statement pieces around their necks this spring. We have provided you with a look at the three most stylish trends in neck accessorizing this season.

Chokers – Chokers add sass to any outfit. They can be layered with longer necklaces or additional chokers for extra style.

Bandanas – Coachella takes street style. Bandanas have been on the rise for quite awhile now but people are continuing to innovate the trend. Bandanas may be worn in the old-school Western way for a more casual style, tied in the front for a very hipster style, or folded horizontally as a statement piece.

Neck Scarves – Extreme chic. It no longer needs to be chilly to wear a scarf. This look is classy and elegant with zero-care flair.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I am 26 years old, born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I grew up with a strong sense of my own style and never liked to follow the style “rules.” If my mom said, wear pink and a dress, I wanted to wear jean shorts and a t-shirt and make my own clothes. I was lucky enough to travel a good amount growing up and always brought back inspiration from wherever I went. From there, I lived my life like any Southern California girl – going to the beach and spending time with family and friends. Fashion just felt like the next natural step for me as a career when I grew up. With a marketing and styling background, Style by the People was my creative outlet and personal way to merge my two careers and start a passion project, which I’ve been lucky to turn into a career.

If you could sneak into anyone’s closet whose would you peek at?
Olivia Palermo, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s closet. Oops…that’s three

What style rule do you always follow?
For me, there are no rules which is why style is endless and hard to define. I guess my rule is to be you no matter what trend you’re wearing.

What is your favorite quote?
“Just Do It” — Nike

What inspired your blog?
I had always thought about starting a blog since I was 17 and was told I should because people always loved my personal style and wanted to see what I was wearing growing up, but I was nervous to put myself out there and do it. Years later, I was bored at work and wasn’t feeling inspired and wanted to merge what I loved, which is style, traveling, and lifestyle, with my experience, which was marketing and styling. I decided I had nothing to lose and just put myself out there.

Three things that are always in your purse?
Chapstick (at least one), Clean & Clear Oil Blotters (no one likes a shiny face), and a hairband.

Where do you find inspiration for blog posts?
Everywhere. There isn’t one place. Sometimes it’s from being in a store, sometimes it’s on a walk, other times it’s from seeing someone else online.

Best style advice you’ve ever given or received?
Push the limits.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion to me is more about the why. Yes, it is superficial as to what you are putting on your body, but it is a way of expressing yourself and why you chose that design.

In your opinion, what separates a great blog from an unsuccessful blog?
Authenticity. It’s easy to let money, politics, and numbers get in the way of staying true to why we all started a blog – which is that we love fashion and getting to share it with each other.

The Trend that Everyone is Rocking

Trends come and go but, thankfully, it seems that concert t-shirts are here to stay. You can dress them up for a night out with friends, or dress them down for a lazy, grunge look, but either way, they are easy and they are chic.

Do people actually care who the band is on your shirt? No, not really. As long as the shirt is a neutral color like gray, black, or white, you’re set. The more vintage and distressed the shirt is, the better. Mark our words; this trend is not going anywhere.

We’ve complied a list of ways to style your band t-shirt for any occasion, as inspired by your favorite celebs:

Spring Style: For the Days You’re Just Not Feeling It

We hear you, girls. Sometimes you’re just not in the mood to wear your fabulous lace top, and new shoes that, albeit, are the hottest trend, but take about 15 minutes just to lace up. Honestly, even Kim Kardashian needs a day off from all of that leather.

No need to worry, our fellow fashion gurus! After thorough research and many overslept days, we have compiled a list of lazy-day essentials that will hide those tired eyes, and still make for a great Insta-worthy outfit.

Flannels – Tying a flannel around your waist automatically says “LA chic”. Add on any pair of sweatpants and crop top and your grunge look is top notch.

Denim Jackets – Adding an oversized denim jacket to any outfit automatically gives it the extra flare. Take it from Kourtney K, the coziest pair of leggings with a denim jacket will look like you’ve planned this outfit for weeks.

Oversized Sunglasses – Go big or go home, as they say. What better way to look alive than by concealing tired eyes? Oversized, unique shades are in and colored lenses look extra stylish on the laziest of Sundays.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Sharon Wu and I am half Singaporean, half Chinese. I graduated from UCSD with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, and moved to Los Angeles after graduation to pursue modeling for two years after being offered an agency contract. From there, I discovered my love for fashion and decided to share my style with the world through my blog, Style Lullaby! Outside of blogging, you can find me as the style editor for the growing MITH Magazine.

If you could sneak into anyone’s closet whose would you peek at?
This one’s tough because I love all sorts of different styles but if I had to pick one at the moment it’d be Jessica Ricks of Hapa Time’s closet! I love how she styles affordable clothing and makes everything look so amazing. I was never a fan of Charlotte Russe until I saw how beautifully she styled their pieces! I feel like I can relate to her as a blogger more so than the other bloggers I follow because I also am a fan of great style on a budget!

What style rule do you always follow?
Coco Chanel’s rule: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”

I am a strong advocate of minimalism but also love accessorizing because it can really add to an outfit. However, sometimes it can get too distracting to have so many things going on, so I like to stand by this rule to keep my looks balanced.

What is your favorite quote?
“If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.” ~Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

This one is so relatable to most creative individuals, including myself! I am a huge dreamer and believe that with time, hard work, and determination, anyone can make their dreams come true – whether it be big or small. The only thing holding people back from achieving them sometimes is fear or giving up too soon. Like anyone else out there, I have my own life doubts occasionally but that’s part of the ride! So always dream big J

What inspired your blog?
My brother actually encouraged me to start my blog after I started modelling to share and document my style. He thought it’d be a brilliant idea because I also love to write and my boyfriend is a photographer (Instagram husband role immediately filled!). It started out as a fun hobby, but over time, it has grown to also include topics such as beauty tips, lifestyle, and even a bit of personal stuff!

Three things that are always in your purse?
Wallet, lip gloss, and gum or mints.

Where do you find inspiration for blog posts?
I get some inspiration from some of my favorite bloggers on Instagram, but more importantly, I go with my gut feeling on what styles look best on me and what flatters my body type! Another great source of inspiration is lookbooks for brands I love such as Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. If I had to describe my style in 1-2 words, it’d be boho-chic.

Best style advice you’ve ever given or received?
Just be yourself! Trends will always be in and out, and ultimately, you should wear what makes you feel most comfortable and confident, even if it means going against or not following a current trend.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is everywhere and is more definitive, while style is more personal and unique to each person.

In your opinion, what separates a great blog from an unsuccessful blog?
Consistency, consistency, consistency! Great photos and a nice personality help too J

Met Gala ’16 Looks We Loved

Finally, May has arrived! Yes, we love the blooming flowers and unwavering sunshine, but most importantly it means it’s time for the Costume Institute Gala. Every fashion guru knows that the biggest event of the year occurs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and hosts only the most worthy celebs. The Costume Institute Gala, better known as the Met Gala, sets the stage for pushing the limits in fashion.

This year’s theme, Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology, meant two things: tamagotchis and robotic arms. While many outfits stayed true to the theme this year, we’ve chosen a few that were, well, out of this world.

Kendall Jenner – First off, we already know that Kendall Jenner can pull off anything, but this Versace gown is next level.  The blue and white cage cutouts show skin at every angle, yet we’re still focused on how exquisite that design is.

Brie Larson – Who knew sequin could look so beautiful? Or, maybe that’s just Brie Larson. She nailed this year’s theme with her Proenza Schouler dress and velvet bow. Brie looks elegant and chic in this futuristic look.

Bella Hadid – So maybe Bella Hadid doesn’t look SUPER new-age technology, but she still looks absolutely amazing! Bella looks sophisticated and chic in this Givenchy gown and, while she is relatively scarce on jewelry, she has the best piece of arm candy by her side. Great job Bella, you look like a rock star!
