Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Kathleen and I’m a 22 year-old fashion blogger from Chicago. I’m currently a senior journalism major with a minor in philosophy at Elon University, which is located in North Carolina. Although I’m presently living in the South, I’m a city girl through and through. I love Chicago and I’ve also lived in Los Angeles and New York City for a short period of time. Obviously fashion is a huge passion of mine and in LA and NY I was lucky enough to get internships in the industry. In fact, this past summer I worked for The Daily Front Row, the official magazine of New York Fashion Week, and it was a blast. I got to attend movie premiers, red carpet events, interview movie stars, and even go to a ball – how cool is that? In May I’m moving back to The Big Apple to pursue a career in fashion journalism – wish me luck!unnamed

If you could sneak into anyone’s closet whose would you peek at?
I would absolutely love to take a tour of Blair Eadie’s closet, the blogger behind my favorite blog, Atlantic-Pacific. If I ever even got to meet her I would definitely have a fan-girl moment! I love Blair because her style is pretty much everything I want mine to be. She’s classic yet fresh, colorful, polished, sophisticated, but also exciting. Her clothing choices speak to me and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her repeat an item – she’s just fabulous!

What style rule do you always follow?
I struggle with this question because I honestly don’t think I follow any rules – that’s the glorious thing about fashion! Fashion has no rules or boundaries, my motto is: if you like it, wear it! Life is too short to follow a rulebook and the fashion industry agrees. Following fashion rules is archaic in my mind. I grew up with my mom telling me not to wear navy and black together, no white after Labor Day, match your shoes to your purse, pattern mixing is a no-no, etc. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve completely disregarded every single fashion rule I’ve ever come across. Rules don’t make sense in fashion because style is all about freedom, self-expression, risk-taking, and creativity. Everyone has their own unique way of showing off who they are and that’s beautiful!

What is your favorite quote?
“You can be miserable or you can motivate yourself, the choice is always yours.” I don’t know who said this but it’s become my mantra. I find it incredibly inspiring and encouraging – so much so that I hung it up in my bathroom right next to my mirror. I’m a huge quote person and there are hundreds that I love (I have a never-ending list of quotes on my phone), but this is the one that has stuck with me the most.

What inspired your blog?
I started my beloved fashion blog, Kat’s Fashion Fix, in 2012 as a way to express my creative side and to inspire others. I’ve always had a passion for fashion and I’ve loved putting together outfits since elementary school but I never thought of it as anything more than a hobby until college. After my first year of college I realized that I could turn my love of fashion into a career and I got really excited by that idea. Having a blog is a great way to get involved in the industry on your own. I knew it would make me standout to future employers and once I started blogging I couldn’t get enough. I love the whole community and it’s such a fabulous way for me to explore other people’s styles as well as develop my own.

Three things that are always in your purse?
I always have at least one (…or five) lipglosses/lipsticks in my purse along with a mini moleskin notebook, which is the journalist in me because you never know when you’ll have to jot something down! The last thing I never leave home without is a snack – I’m not even kidding. I’m obsessed with these organic coconut and dark chocolate granola bars and I always have one in my purse – either that or an applesauce squeeze pack. A girl’s gotta eat and hunger can strike at any moment!

Where do you find inspiration for blog posts?
I immerse myself in the fashion industry as much as I can by reading fashion magazines and following hundreds of blogs, which is where I get most of my inspiration. But I also turn to Pinterest and Instagram quite often as well. Instagram has quickly become my favorite way to check out what other people are wearing and I follow tons of fashion bloggers on there. My fellow bloggers are truly my number one inspiration because they’re genuine and they show off real clothes that real people can wear. Fashion magazines are fun but I view them more as art. The clothing and models are beautiful to look at but they just aren’t realistic, especially not for everyday life.

Best style advice you’ve ever given or received?
If you feel fabulous in it, wear it. Don’t follow the trends because everyone else is; wear what you want, when you want. Dare to standout and take risks – that’s when fashion gets fun!

What’s the one thing in your closet that you couldn’t live without?
My black, faux-leather motto jacket. I wear it with everything! Not only does it compliment anything I’m wearing, it literally completes my entire look by adding instant edge and personality. You can’t go wrong with this staple!

In your opinion, what separates a great blog from an unsuccessful blog?
Passion and dedication. Some people get involved in blogging for the fame or for the perks, and while that comes with the territory for some lucky bloggers, you have to love what you’re doing enough to stick with it through the tough times. Gaining loyal followers and attracting hundreds of visitors to your site daily is hard, but if you’re blogging for the sheer love of it success will follow because your authenticity will shine through.

Kandy Kiss at Coachella!

This year we hit Coachella weekend 1 with style. Untitled1Our crew of ladies hit the hottest pool parties, sipped champagne at brunch, hung out in the beer gardens, and saw some of the hottest musical acts of the year! I don’t think the weekend at Coachella could have gotten any hotter, and neither could the outfits! The weekend was a complete whirlwind. Some of our favorite acts included Odeza, Alesso, Alt-J, Azealia Banks, Florence and the Machines, Clean Bandit, DJ Snake, ACDC and of course, DRAKE! Can’t believe we actually survived the weekend in the heat, but we are still wishing we could go back in time and do it all over again!

We envy who every gets to go to weekend 2, we hear it’s going to be epic! And if it is anything like weekend 1 you are in for the best weekend ever. Make sure to get your last minuet outfits together, you don’t want to roll up in anything less than perfect. Pair your polka-dot high wasted shorts with a cool tee and a fabulous hat. You can also never go wring with a fun graphic tank and cut offs.

Fringe is always a yes when your heading to the desert. If your not into hats, try a colorful headband. Headbands make any outfit fun and keep your head out of your face while you’re rocking out with Jack White at the main stage.

Have fun you weekend 2 goers! And weekend 1, we will be seeing you next year! Only 365 days left…..

Fashion Tips to Help You Repair Your Broken Bank

Its no secret that fashion gets expensive, and a lot of people have the amazing minds of fashion gurus but yet they don’t have the budget to match. Well, we’re here to tell you that its okay. Sometimes you don’t have to break the bank to get good style, although sometimes…..you do. We are here to help you change your spending ways and try to save a little less in the clothing department, here are our tips:

5-holiday-shopping-tips-to-stay-on-budget

1. Buy off-season: This is probably our best piece of advice. Have you ladies ever looked into buying a bathing suit in November? You will be amazed at the price difference. When summer time rolls around, the only thing you’ll be worried about is what beach you’re heading to that day.

2. Thrift stores: some people don’t like thrift stores, but we promise that although you might strike out at these stores every once in a while, you’re bound to come across a pair of Tory Burch shoes that some rich woman decided to give up to the poor, like us.

3. Buy full outfits: there’s nothing worse than buying that amazing leather pink skirt and being so in love with it, and then having nothing to wear it with. You might as well just put the money in the trash because if you don’t have anything to wear with that skirt, it’s going to end up collecting lots of dust.

4. Sell or trade unwanted clothing: Its amazing how easily you can sell clothes that you don’t wear. You can trade them for store credit to thrift stores sometimes, or you can sell them online and get actual cash to go buy more clothes with, it’s a win win for everyone!

Fashion Spotlight: Kacie Ellis!

fashion spotlight-Recovered

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?unnamed
I’m Kacie, a twenty-something year old California native, wife, mom to two doggies, and blogger. I was born and raised in a small, country town in the northern part of Northern California, but I now live in the Sacramento area. I was a total tomboy growing up but somehow morphed into a fashion lover. I used to own an online boutique and started blogging in 2012 to help promote my boutique. Since then, I have closed my store so I can focus more on blogging. I recently rebranded my blog from Kacie’s Kloset to Elements of Ellis. I’d love for you to stop by and say hi! J

If you could sneak into anyone’s closet whose would you peek at?
I would love to take a peek at Alexa Chung’s closet! I love everything she wears.

What style rule do you always follow?
My number one style rule is that you have to feel amazing in what you’re wearing.

What is your favorite quote?
“When it get’s too tough for everyone else, it’s just right for me.” It’s a quote my dad has always said to my sister and me. It’s a reminder that we can make it through anything.

mixed-print-outfit-4

What inspired your blog?
My clothing boutique is what inspired me to start my blog, but my love for fashion and everyone who reads my blog is what inspires me to keep at it. I want Elements of Ellis to be a place people come for some fashion inspiration and a laugh. My 87 year-old grandpa is the inspiration for that. His goal is to make people happy. He smiles and waves at everyone he sees, he buys Reese’s candy for the cashiers at the grocery store, he hosts a neighborhood gathering every Friday night, and he brings people joy in everything he does. I hope that is what my blog brings to people; a smile, a laugh, joy.

Three things that are always in your purse?
1. My wallet 2. Sunglasses. I always have two or three pairs in my bag. 3. A small bag for makeup. This bag is where most of my lipsticks end up.

Where do you find inspiration for blog posts?
I look for inspiration from other bloggers, magazines, celebrities, and of course Pinterest.

Best style advice you’ve ever given or received?
I think the best style advice is to focus more on what looks good on your body type than on what’s trending. Not all trends are made for everyone. And most importantly, only wear something that makes you feel your best.

jewelry-for-small-wrists

What’s the one thing in your closet that you couldn’t live without?
Right now I’d have to say my black ripped skinny jeans. I can’t seem to stop wearing them.

In your opinion, what separates a great blog from an unsuccessful blog?
Time, hard work, and dedication is what separates successful blogs and unsuccessful blogs.

The Perfect Easter Outfit For Whatever You Have Planned

Looking at the calendar, we just realized that Easter is just around the corner, wait a second wasn’t it just Christmas? Nonetheless, its time to prepare! What will you wear? For some, Easter fashion needs to be more modest, and for others it can be a more casual. Here are our outfit ideas for whatever you might have planned for the day:

1: Church: if you’re going to head to church with grandma and grandpa, you might want to dress a little bit more on the modest side, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be fashion forward and fabulous!  Try pairing a pastel cool-colored knee-length flowing dress with a pastel warm-colored sweater, and a chunky cute necklace to top it off. The color mixture is really trendy and very festive.

2. Brunch at a fancy restaurant: This is something that you might be able to have a little more fun with. Since you won’t be inside of a church, you can show a little skin! Try our Wild Kiss maxi dress with a lattice-back to show a little skin, but still look classy. The shape of it compliments a woman’s body and gives you a little more confidence.

3. Family BBQ: Maybe official events just aren’t your family’s thing for Easter, you’d much rather grill up some hot dogs and hang out at the park with all your relatives. The outfit can be super casual, and easy to move around in. Try pairing some high-waisted lace shorts with a simple colored crop top and a cute necklace to finish it off!
